 | | Clutter-free living. Many satisfied clients. TERRI’S ORGANIZING VIGNETTE: SEPTEMBER 2017
SOMETIMES I CAN’T MAKE A DIFFERENCE... I have a chronically disorganized client I’ll call Matt I’ve worked with on and off for 5 years. He has some sort of learning disability and many health conditions. His parents convince him to call me (and pay me) to clear his clutter every so often, but I honestly don’t think it bothers Matt like it bothers his parents.
His dog is a menace to whatever system I’ve set up. For example, I put Matt’s every day pills (of which there are many) in a container on his coffee table where Matt can access it with his limited ability to walk well and bend over much — and the dog knocks it the ground daily. We put it on top of the kitchen island, and the cats knock it over. Matt’s pets keep him company in his isolated life so getting rid of the dog and two cats is not an option.

I’ll throw trash away; put mail in a box for us to go through and then file; separate categories and put them away (clothing; medicine; toiletries; tools; shopping bags) as the same mess is always all over the floor and covering the kitchen island. Even though I’ve created clearly labeled boxes for each of the categories for Matt to put the items away, he just doesn’t or won’t or can’t. It’s unclear to me if it’s lack of motivation, lack of interest, or he honestly can’t keep his space neat and clean because of his health and mental insufficiencies.
Matt’s parents are elderly. I’ve tried to get him to set up a meeting with a Daily Money Manager who could be hired to take care of his affairs since his parents are doing that now. I care about Matt’s future and hope the best for him.
